Portable Solar Panel - Packable Power

If you're into high-tech gadgets, a portable solar panel is a high-tech gadget you can use to power up other high-tech gadgets. And it's a really cool way to integrate your eco-friendly and digital lifestyles.

Of course it's not an option to have your iPhone or MP3 player die on you.

Bad news.

Why not keep them juiced with a solar panel that you can strap to your backpack? Or get one that's built-in to your messenger bag. You can charge on the go.

Freedom...

You've probably seen all those laptop computer ads showing happy people laying in the park while they work. You can do this too, without losing your charge...with a portable solar panel. And as a bonus you'll be using a clean, free energy source. Perfect for green living.

What if you could also use one of these panels indoors? This is possible, depending on which kind you decide to get. Solar panels that utilize amorphous solar technology are able to convert low light, indirect light and even indoor lighting into usable power. Of course, we've already been doing this on a smaller scale with solar-powered calculators.

Let's take a brief look at the types of portable solar panels available.

First there are those that come in a tough casing and unfold like a clamshell or small netbook computer. Examples of this type include the Solarmonkey or Solargorilla by Powertraveller. Larger ones can even charge a notebook directly. But you can have them charging a separate battery between the panel and the device being charged. This will keep a more constant charge going, even when light levels drop, or you fold up the solar panel.

Second, you could flex a little...with a flexible solar panel. This type is a roll-able polymer that has the photovoltaic cell laminated to it or even "printed" onto it. This is often referred to as thin film solar cell technology. Long name for cool stuff. Advantages include: they are lightweight; polymer backing can be quite durable; they can be rolled up and stashed efficiently.

And third, there's the folding solar panel. These are usually also the flexible type and there are a lot of options available. This kind of panel really packs up neatly and is convenient to carry. Simply unfold them and lay them in the sun. And they are available in a number of sizes and power capacities. The difference with these is they tend to take up more space when they're open than the hard clamshell style. This is partly due to the fact that the thin film technology is a bit less efficient. So you need more panel real estate to get the same job done.

Whatever kind of portable solar panel you decide on, you'll be choosing both a convenient and an environmentally friendly source of power. You've got power to go!
